There are a few clear lines of distinction for settings and configurations for
IBM WebSphere brand products. This article will attempt to simplify and
organize the information.
Product prerequisites for Operating System
Shared and Universal Product Configuration
Generally Advised Settings
Application Specific Settings
As business changes and technology changes the need to adjust any number of configurations from Operating System to product level to application code and settings is systemic. This necessitates an ongoing identification, remediation and governance to adapt and adopt best practices and remediate and respond to address more up to date settings quickly.
At this stage of IBM's product evolution many offer autonomic computing features to detect and adjust settings on the fly such as IBM WebSphere Application Server version 8.x. While this sounds as if all is automatic, it still requires configuration to unlock these features and at times procurement and configuration of additional tools and products such as Dynamic Automation and Tivoli event monitoring.
Product prerequisites for Operating System
These settings are specified by IBM Hursley in the product documentation which is open and freely available online.
Some settings are required prerequisites and others are recommended baselines.
Still others are offered as guidelines for what works most of the time for most customers with few exceptions.
ex. ulimit
If not set properly some of these settings can have performance and stability implications.
The appropriate place to apply these settings is in the build process before installing the product.
Shared and Universal Product Configuration
These settings apply to services shared by all applications running within a product and include both administrative and shared backbone services used by all applications.
ex. DeploymentManager, NodeAgents,
These settings are still driven by the number and type of applications hosted within the Product infrastructure. There is no one size fits all configuration(s).
Generally Advised Settings
Generally advised settings apply to any layer from Operating System to application level running within the IBM WebSphere product. These settings are those identified to work for most customer's with few exceptions. Ocassionally these exceptions are explained and explicit an other times they are only generally advised as to what factors contribute to the exception.
Application Specific Settings
Application Specific Product Service Configurations are the JEE and other standard services used by the application. While these are specific to the application and environment there are some baseline recommendations to begin with before performance testing and releasing a new application into production.
